The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has pledged to install between 11 and 15 kilowatts of solar power on every Nigerian roof within 11 months if elected president in 2027.

Adebayo made the pledge during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where he outlined his proposed approach to addressing Nigeria’s electricity challenges.

According to the SDP candidate, his administration would focus on decentralised solar power generation, with solar clusters serving communities while the national grid operates mainly as a backup system.

He said the plan would involve establishing solar-panel manufacturing plants in different parts of the country and training Nigerians to install and maintain the systems.

Adebayo projected that the proposed solar clusters could generate as much as 32,000 megawatts while also creating employment opportunities.

He said power from one cluster could be used to support another whenever there was a problem with a particular installation.

The SDP candidate also said Nigeria could work with countries such as China, Turkey and India to establish the manufacturing facilities and develop local capacity in the solar industry.

Adebayo said he had personally experimented with solar technology in his hometown, claiming that he had trained about 2,000 people in the area.

He also said he manufactures solar panels and lithium batteries but currently purchases inverters because he does not yet have the technology to produce them.

On Nigeria’s broader energy challenges, Adebayo advocated increased investment in domestic refining and measures to address crude oil theft.

He claimed that up to 900,000 barrels of crude oil were being stolen, arguing that recovering the lost crude would increase available supply without placing additional financial pressure on the government.

Beyond electricity, Adebayo said government investment in strategic sectors such as aviation, manufacturing and education could improve public services while creating jobs.

He argued that government-owned assets could be managed through operating and maintenance arrangements rather than leaving strategic sectors entirely to private investors.

Adebayo emerged as the SDP’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election at the party’s national convention in Bauchi in May.
