Teacher's Day: A Poetic Tribute to Teachers and the Heroes of Education
By Victor Olubiye
There are people who build houses,
people who build roads,
people who build businesses,
and people who build nations.
But behind many of these builders
stands someone who first taught them
how to read,
how to think,
how to dream,
and how to believe
that something greater was possible.
That person is a teacher.
Today, October 5, 2026,
as the world celebrates Teachers' Day,
we pause to honour the men and women
who enter classrooms each day
to shape minds, build character
and prepare young people for life.
To the teacher who arrives early,
stays after the bell,
explains the same lesson repeatedly,
marks scripts long after school hours
and tells a struggling child,
“Try again,”
we see you.
You do more than teach Mathematics,
English, Science, History or any other subject.
You teach courage.
You teach discipline.
You teach patience.
You teach responsibility.
You teach children how to rise after failure
and believe in themselves again.
A lesson may last forty minutes,
but its impact can last a lifetime.
Sometimes, a teacher becomes more than a teacher.
For the student carrying fear,
family challenges, poverty, loneliness
or the weight of expectations,
a teacher may become the person who notices.
The person who asks,
“Are you okay?”
The person who says,
“Don't give up.”
The person who makes a child realise,
“You matter.”
That is also education.
But today, our tribute extends beyond the classroom.
To the parents who sacrifice
to keep their children in school;
to the proprietors, principals, headteachers
and school administrators who keep institutions running;
to lecturers and teacher trainers
who prepare the next generation of educators;
to education policymakers and administrators
whose decisions shape learning systems;
to authors, textbook writers and librarians
who make knowledge accessible;
and to the non-teaching staff
whose quiet work keeps schools functioning—
we celebrate you.
Education is not built by one person.
It is a collective effort.
The teacher needs the parent.
The student needs the teacher.
The school needs its workers.
And society needs all of them.
To every teacher who has ever wondered
whether their work truly matters:
Somewhere, a former student is building a career
because you taught them to believe in themselves.
Somewhere, a doctor, lawyer, journalist, engineer, entrepreneur, artist or teacher
is using knowledge that began in your classroom.
Somewhere, another teacher
is standing before students today
because you inspired them.
You may never know
how far one lesson travelled.
You may never see
the full result of one word of encouragement.
But that is the beauty of teaching.
You plant. They grow.
You teach. They become.
You guide. They lead.
You encourage. They rise.
Teachers are more than professionals.
They are builders of minds,
shapers of character,
mentors of dreams
and quiet architects of the future.
Nations may be built in parliaments
and decisions may be made in boardrooms,
but long before leaders occupy those places,
someone taught them how to read, write, think and reason.
That is why teachers matter.
And that is why today,
we do not simply say:
Happy Teachers' Day.
We say:
Thank you for building tomorrow.
Thank you for every early morning.
Thank you for every lesson prepared.
Thank you for every script marked.
Thank you for every correction.
Thank you for every “well done.”
Thank you for every “try again.”
Thank you for refusing to give up on a child.
To every teacher, educator, mentor, parent, school leader, education worker and student contributing to the journey of learning:
We see you.
We appreciate you.
We celebrate you.
Because teachers do not simply teach children.
They teach the future.
And when that future finally arrives,
their fingerprints will be everywhere.
Happy World Teachers' Day 2026.
