Awosina Kehinde Johnson, popularly known as DokTur Awo, has declared his intention to contest for the office of president of the Federation of Ijesa Students’ Union (FISU).
Johnson, a student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, made his intention known in a declaration statement in which he outlined his leadership experience and proposed agenda for the union.
He said his ambition was driven by a desire to contribute to the growth, unity and advancement of Ijesa students across the six local government areas of Ijesaland.
Johnson, who hails from Okun Compound, Imesi-Ile, in Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State, said his leadership experience had strengthened his commitment to student representation, accountability, inclusiveness and service delivery.
He listed his previous positions to include president of the Obokun Students’ Union between 2025 and 2026 and president of the Imesi-Ile National Students’ Union from 2023 to 2025.
He also served as national electoral secretary of FISU in 2024, director of socials of the union’s OAU chapter in the same year, and a member of the FISU National Students’ Representative Council.
Other positions he listed include chairman of the planning committee for FISU National Week 2026, chairman of the planning committee for the NAOSS Leadership Summit 2.0, and block representative of Fajuyi Hall of Residence, OAU, in 2025.
According to him, these experiences had equipped him with the knowledge required to manage student affairs and work with people from different backgrounds.
“I am not coming to FISU with promises alone; I am coming with experience, a record of service, and a determination to do more,” he said.
Unveils AWO Agenda
The presidential aspirant also unveiled what he called the AWO Agenda, a three-point framework built around advocacy, welfare and opportunity.
Under advocacy, Johnson said he would promote effective representation of students and strengthen communication between FISU, educational institutions, government agencies, community leaders and other relevant stakeholders.
He added that his administration would pursue constructive engagement on issues affecting students and work to ensure that their concerns received appropriate attention.
On welfare, he promised to prioritise access to academic support, scholarship information, educational opportunities and welfare assistance.
He said improved engagement and information sharing would help students across Ijesaland become better informed about available opportunities and resources.
The third pillar, opportunity, focuses on leadership development, entrepreneurship, digital and vocational skills, career development, mentorship and professional networking.
Johnson said he wanted to build a federation that would equip students with the knowledge, connections and opportunities needed to succeed beyond the classroom.
Says Experience Will Guide Leadership
The aspirant described his previous leadership positions as a foundation for the responsibility he hopes to assume at the federation's helm.
Under the slogan, “Experience, Not Experiment,” he said his record of service had taught him the importance of teamwork, consultation, accountability and translating plans into action.
He maintained that his ambition was not simply to acquire another leadership title but to strengthen the union and advance the collective interests of Ijesa students.
“My guiding conviction remains simple: ‘Not leadership for the title, but leadership for the task,’” he said.
Johnson called on students across the six local government areas, former union executives, student leaders and other stakeholders to support his aspiration.
He said he was seeking their support, endorsement, prayers and partnership to build what he described as a more responsive, progressive and result-oriented FISU.
He concluded his declaration with the slogan, “Presiding with Purpose, Progressing with Precision.”
