As the race for the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Treasurer position at Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, gathers attention, Aminu Maleek Akorede, popularly known as AMK, is making financial transparency and accountability the centre of his campaign.

Akorede, an ND 1 student of Accountancy at the polytechnic, made his position known in an exclusive interview with The Creativity Site, where he outlined what he would do differently if elected to manage the union’s finances.

He identified lack of transparency and accountability in student leadership as one of the major problems facing students, saying his priority would be to ensure that students’ funds are properly managed and accounted for.

According to him, proper financial records, clear budgeting and documentation of expenditure would form the basis of his approach to the Treasurer’s office.

“My focus will be on service, not personal gain,” Akorede said.

The candidate listed financial transparency, student welfare support and better financial planning as his three priorities for his first 100 days in office.

On financial transparency, he said he would establish proper and accessible financial records while ensuring that every expenditure is properly documented.

He also promised to work with other SUG executives to identify areas where available funds could directly support students’ needs.

Akorede said he would introduce proper budgeting before spending, with clear priorities guiding the allocation of SUG resources.

Asked what students should expect to see change under his leadership, he said his approach would be built around ensuring that every naira handled by the union is accounted for.

“I will promote a culture where every naira is accounted for,” he said.

He added that students should expect proper documentation, responsible spending, transparency and regular financial accountability.

The ND 1 Accountancy student also said his responsibilities would go beyond financial records, as he intends to work with other SUG executives and student representatives on issues affecting students.

He said available funds would be directed towards meaningful student-oriented programmes, while supporting initiatives focused on welfare, academic development and students’ rights.

On communication, Akorede said he would encourage clearer communication between students and their representatives.

He said his ultimate goal would be to leave behind a financial management system that students could associate with transparency and accountability.

“I want to be remembered as the Treasurer who brought transparency, accountability and responsible financial management to the SUG,” Akorede said.
