TRAGEDY: OSPOLY Student Dies After Reported Stabbing at NANS Convention as Concerned Students Petition Police

The reported death of an Osun State Polytechnic, Iree student at the 2026 NANS JCC Osun Convention has taken a new turn, with concerned students petitioning the Osun State Police Command to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The student, Ademiju Ayeni, popularly known as Jago, was reportedly stabbed around the entrance of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Osogbo on Friday, August 28, during the convention.

He was reportedly taken away for medical attention after the incident and later died.

The circumstances leading to the reported stabbing, the identity of the alleged attacker and the events that followed remain unclear.

A group identifying itself as Osun State Concerned Students has now formally asked the police to investigate the matter.

In a petition dated August 29 and addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, the group requested a “thorough, impartial and transparent investigation” into Ayeni's death.

The petition said an altercation reportedly occurred during the commencement of the NANS JCC Osun convention, during which Ayeni was allegedly stabbed by an individual whose identity and status at the event had not been established.

It also claimed that Ayeni was taken to LAUTECH Hospital for medical attention but was reportedly not admitted before he was taken to Mercyland Hospital along Olude, Osogbo, where he reportedly died.

The petition goes beyond the alleged stabbing itself, asking investigators to examine the security arrangements at the convention.

Among the issues it wants addressed are how any weapon allegedly used in the incident entered the venue, who authorised access to the premises and the circumstances surrounding the issuance and use of security identification tags.

The petition also named several individuals whom the group said could provide information useful to the investigation.

Comrade Ajani Olanrewaju, popularly known as “Fabulous”, was mentioned as the person who allegedly brought Ayeni from Iree to Osogbo for the convention.

Alabi Taofeek Ariyibi, also known as “Ijaya”, and Tobi Alagbada were also mentioned in connection with allegations concerning access to the venue and security identification tags.

The petition further identified Olalekan Rokeeb Olabamiji, whom the petitioners described as being close to Ayeni and an eyewitness to the incident.

The group asked the police to obtain statements from the individuals and independently examine the claims made about them.

It stressed that the people named were not being accused of committing the alleged attack, but were being identified because they were believed to have information that could assist investigators.

The petitioners also asked the police to identify other witnesses, examine any recovered weapon and relevant forensic evidence, investigate the medical circumstances surrounding Ayeni's death and prosecute anyone found culpable.

Journalist Lebi Anuoluwapo, who spoke to The Creativity Site by phone, said some of the information he received came from a friend who was present at the convention.

According to Lebi, his contact arrived at the venue and later learnt that Ayeni was an IT student.

He said the source described the alleged weapon as “Obe Makanje,” a Yoruba expression referring to a sharp-headed knife.

Lebi said his source's account raised questions about the nature of the weapon allegedly used in the attack and the circumstances surrounding Ayeni's injuries.

However, claims that the weapon was poisonous or that the attack was deliberately planned have not been independently verified.

Lebi called for the case to be escalated to the appropriate authorities.

He said a proper investigation was needed to establish what happened, identify those responsible and determine the circumstances surrounding Ayeni's death.

The latest petition follows an earlier call for investigation by Olayinka Popoola, an aspirant who later withdrew from the NANS JCC Osun chairmanship contest.

In a statement titled “A Call for Transparency and Justice,” Popoola expressed concern over what he described as the apparent lack of sufficient information following the reported incident.

He called on the NANS Southwest Coordinator, Josiah Adeyemo, and the NANS National President, Akinteye Babtee Babatunde, to provide explanations concerning what happened at the convention.

Popoola also called on the Osun State NUJ leadership to address the reported violence because the incident was said to have occurred around the entrance of the NUJ Press Centre.

He further urged the Osun State Police Command, through its Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, and the Department of State Services to provide credible information.

“This should not be about politics, or personal interests,” Popoola stated, while calling for transparency, accountability and an investigation.

Amid the calls for an investigation, the newly elected NANS JCC Osun Axis leadership has appealed to students and stakeholders to remain calm.

In a statement issued on August 29, the new leadership mourned Ayeni and extended condolences to his family, friends, the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree community and the wider Osun student constituency.

The leaders said they were focused on the electoral proceedings inside the venue and only became aware of the tragic development afterwards.

They urged students to reject retaliation and avoid spreading unverified accounts that could worsen tensions.

The leadership said the election had ended and that the collective responsibility of students should now be peace, reconciliation and unity.

The statement was signed by Comrade Keinde Ayokule Temiloluwa (Kaywhytee), Chairman-Elect; Comrade Odewale Favour Olatunde (Oladex), General Secretary-Elect; and Comrade Adediran Okikijesu (Okiki), Public Relations Officer-Elect.

The developments have shifted attention from the outcome of the NANS JCC election to the circumstances surrounding Ayeni's death.

The petition asks the police to establish what triggered the reported altercation, who allegedly stabbed Ayeni, whether others were involved and how the alleged weapon entered the venue.

It also asks investigators to examine whether those involved in security duties at the convention were authorised to perform such functions.

At the time of filing this report, The Creativity Site had not independently established the circumstances surrounding the stabbing, the identity of any alleged attacker or the cause of Ayeni's death.

No finding of criminal responsibility has been established against any of the individuals named in the petition.

The allegations therefore remain subject to investigation and official confirmation.

For now, students are calling for answers while the newly elected NANS JCC Osun leadership is urging restraint.

The next significant development will be an official account from the relevant authorities on what happened at the NUJ Press Centre on August 28 and the circumstances surrounding the death of Ademiju Ayeni.
