Abdulrauf Sulaimon Ayomide, popularly known as AY Nation, an ND 1 Banking and Finance student of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, has promised to turn the SUG Vice President’s office into an active and responsive channel for addressing students’ welfare concerns if elected.

Ayomide, who is contesting for the position of SUG Vice President, made the pledge in an exclusive interview with The Creativity Site during its #MeetTheContestants Election Interview Series ahead of the OSPOLY election.

AY Nation said students currently face challenges including accommodation difficulties, high transport costs, sudden levies and delays in getting their complaints to management.

To address these concerns, he proposed a complaint resolution committee, subsidised transport and a welfare emergency fund for students with urgent medical or academic needs.

He also identified student-management liaison, an “Academics First” programme, and transparency and inclusion as key areas of his proposed administration.

According to AY Nation, his approach to the Vice President’s office would differ from what he described as a largely ceremonial role.

“Previous VPs were only ceremonial, I will be an active. I won’t wait for the President to assign me duties. I’ll lead welfare and internal affairs myself,” he said.

He also promised to make himself accessible to students, saying his phone number and office would be open without protocols.

“Action over grammar,” AY Nation said, explaining that he would focus on achieving visible results rather than holding excessive meetings.

On welfare programmes, he proposed monitoring teams and feedback forms to assess their impact, saying programmes that students do not feel the benefit of would be stopped.

For academics, AY Nation said tutorial attendance and test scores would be tracked to measure the effectiveness of academic interventions.

He further promised to attend management meetings and provide students with summaries within 48 hours, insisting that students should not be kept in the dark about matters affecting them.

“No secrets,” he said.

On students’ rights, AY Nation said he would work with the Legal Director to defend students facing victimisation.

“One student’s problem is SUG’s problems,” he said.

AY Nation said he wants to be remembered for making the Vice President’s office “the most responsive office in SUG history” and an office that actually solves students’ problems.

He also set a personal accountability test for his proposed tenure.

“If at the end of my tenure, students still say SUG doesn’t listen to us or We don’t know what SUG is doing, then I have failed. Vote me out of your memory,” he said.
