By Samuel Ashiwel The tragedy of a nation is not when it fails to cross to the other side. It is when it deliberately sets fire to the bridge while still standing on it. Every functional polity is built on a bridge. One side of the river holds raw potential; population, resources, diversity. The other side holds the promise; stability, prosperity, and justice. The bridge itself is made of invisible materials: trust in institutions, respect for rules, commitment to merit, and the willingness to produce rather than merely share. In the early years of our political journey, that bridge existed. There was competition among the constituent parts. One region built monumental estates from agricultural proceeds. Another built the largest markets in West Africa from trade and commerce. A third built enduring educational institutions from its own internally generated revenue. The centre was weak, the federating units were strong, and development was a race. Then, gradually and consciously,...

By Victor Olubiye  A young Nigerian graduate leaves home with a NYSC call-up letter, a few clothes packed in a bag and the excitement of beginning another stage of life. For many parents, it is supposed to be a moment of pride. Their child is leaving home to serve the country. But what happens when the journey to the orientation camp becomes a security concern? That is the question the recent abduction of prospective corps members in Imo State raises. Reports said prospective corps members travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, towards orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom were attacked along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in the Umunoha area of Imo State. According to the Imo State Police Command, security operatives later located the suspected camp where some of the victims were being held after using drones and trailing the abductors. However, the police said they were cautious about moving into the area because intelligence indicated that the camp might have been planted with imp...

By Victor Olubiye There are people who build houses, people who build roads, people who build businesses, and people who build nations. But behind many of these builders stands someone who first taught them how to read, how to think, how to dream, and how to believe that something greater was possible. That person is a teacher. Today, October 5, 2026, as the world celebrates Teachers' Day, we pause to honour the men and women who enter classrooms each day to shape minds, build character and prepare young people for life. To the teacher who arrives early, stays after the bell, explains the same lesson repeatedly, marks scripts long after school hours and tells a struggling child, “Try again,” we see you. You do more than teach Mathematics, English, Science, History or any other subject. You teach courage. You teach discipline. You teach patience. You teach responsibility. You teach children how to rise after failure and believe in themselves again. A lesson may last forty minutes,...

By Victor Olubiye Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1, 2026, but many details about how the country became independent are often reduced to a few familiar names and the lowering of the Union Jack. Nigeria became independent from Britain on October 1, 1960, under a parliamentary system of government. Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was Prime Minister, while Nnamdi Azikiwe became Governor-General. Beyond the date and the celebrations, there are other details about Nigeria's independence that are less commonly discussed. Here are 10 of them. 1. Nigeria did not become a republic on October 1, 1960 Independence and becoming a republic were two different events. Nigeria became independent on October 1, 1960, but remained a constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth. The Queen was still the head of state, represented in Nigeria by the Governor-General. Nigeria became a republic in October 1963, when Nnamdi Azikiwe became the country's first President. 2. Tafawa ...

By Victor Olubiye October 1 is not only Nigeria’s Independence Day. It is also the beginning of another month, giving Nigerians another opportunity to look at what they have achieved so far in 2026 and what they still want to accomplish before the year ends. But beyond the celebrations, October can also be a month to make practical changes. With three months left in the year, here are 10 things Nigerians can consider doing differently this October. 1. Review the goals you set at the beginning of the year Many people started 2026 with plans but may have forgotten some of them along the way. October is a good time to look back at those plans. What has been achieved? What is still possible before December? Which goals should be adjusted? A simple review can help separate what still deserves attention from what no longer fits the current situation. 2. Take your personal finances more seriously October can also be a good point to check how money has been spent since January. Review your reg...

By Samuel Ashiwel On October 1, 1960, Nigeria was born with promise. The Union Jack was lowered, the Green-White-Green was hoisted, and the world looked at Africa's most populous nation as the Black man's great hope. We were a nation with resources, intellect, and resilient people. Sixty-six years later, as we mark another Independence anniversary, it is a time for sober reflection, not just celebration. We must ask ourselves: How far have we truly come from that starting point in 1960, and how much longer is the journey to the Nigeria of our dreams? THE POLITICAL JOURNEY: FROM NATIONALISTS TO CAREERISTS Politically, we have travelled a long and winding road. From the parliamentary system of the First Republic led by nationalists who debated ideology and development, we descended into military coups, a 30-month civil war, and 29 years of military dictatorship that eroded our institutions. Since 1999, we have enjoyed 27 years of unbroken civil rule - the longest in our history. ...

By The Creativity Site For some young people, the fear is simple: if a man has sex and ejaculates almost every day, will he eventually “finish” his sperm and struggle to have children when he is ready? The answer from available medical evidence is no. Frequent sex or ejaculation does not, by itself, cause permanent infertility. In fact, guidance from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) says the belief that frequent ejaculation reduces male fertility is a common misconception. ASRM cites research involving nearly 10,000 semen samples which found that, among men with normal semen quality, sperm concentration and movement remained normal even with daily ejaculation. The organisation also says couples trying to conceive should not be advised to limit how often they have sex because intercourse more frequently than every one to two days is not associated with lower chances of conception. But that does not mean every man who has sex frequently will automatically have ...

In a statement signed by the Polytechnic’s Registrar, Abiodun Oyedele Oloyede, the management said it was not favourably disposed to the proposed candlelight procession taking place on campus.   By Victor Olubiye The Vice Chairman of the Independent Students Electoral Commission (ISEC), Hon. Comrade A.A. Amusan, has said the 78.5 per cent voter turnout recorded in the 2026 Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Students’ Union Government election exceeded the commission’s expectations. Personally, I expected 50-60% of the accredited voters to turnout and at the end we were able to get up to 78.5% voters,” Amusan said. The ISEC Vice Chairman also addressed diffi...
