A 101-year-old woman, identified as Esther Ogunmabo, has told operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) that she began selling cannabis after a fire destroyed her provisions business in Ilisan, Ogun State.
Ogunmabo was arrested by NDLEA operatives on Saturday, August 15, after she was allegedly found with 90 grammes of skunk, a strain of cannabis, packaged in small sachets for sale.
The centenarian reportedly admitted that she sold the substance to people within the community in small quantities.
She explained that the loss of her provisions shop left her without a source of income, prompting her to resort to the illegal trade.
According to the NDLEA, Ogunmabo told investigators that one of her daughters, who lives in Lagos, supplied her with the cannabis every four days.
The woman allegedly sold the drugs in smaller quantities to customers in the area.
Following the arrest, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), directed that Ogunmabo be granted bail and subjected to counselling because of her advanced age.
The agency also arrested the woman’s daughter over her alleged involvement in supplying the illicit substance.
The arrest has drawn attention to the unusual circumstances surrounding the case, particularly the age of the suspect and her explanation that economic hardship following the loss of her business pushed her into the illicit drug trade.
