The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has met with Yoruba nation agitator and leader of the Iru Ekun local security outfit, Sunday Igboho, as part of efforts to secure the release of students and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The meeting, held on Thursday, was led by NANS President, Dist. Comr. Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, who said the visit formed part of the association's ongoing engagement with stakeholders to address the security challenges facing students and educational institutions.

Akinteye said the abduction of the students and teachers had generated widespread concern among Nigerian students, adding that NANS remains committed to exploring all lawful avenues to ensure their immediate rescue and safe return.

According to him, the association's decision to meet with Igboho was informed by his longstanding advocacy for community-based security initiatives and the role of local security outfits in complementing government efforts to combat insecurity.

The NANS president noted that discussions also focused on strengthening local security structures through collaboration with vetted volunteers, including local hunters, experienced community security personnel and other individuals willing to support security operations.

"We are deeply disturbed by the abduction and remain committed to ensuring the immediate rescue and safe return of the victims while also supporting measures that will prevent a recurrence of such incidents," he said.

Responding, Sunday Igboho reportedly commended the leadership of NANS for its continued advocacy on behalf of the abducted students and teachers.

He described the association as a strong voice capable of holding government accountable and praised its proactive efforts toward securing the victims' release.

Igboho reportedly stressed that the security situation should not be politicised, describing the abduction as a national concern that requires collective action from all stakeholders.

He also urged NANS not to relent in its advocacy for the safe return of the victims and improved security across the country.

Meanwhile, Akinteye appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider equipping the Iru Ekun local security outfit as part of broader efforts to strengthen grassroots security and facilitate the rescue of the abducted students and teachers.

The NANS president reiterated the association's commitment to pursuing the safe return of the victims, stating that the student body would not compromise in its quest for justice and security.
