Oba Olakulehin ascended the throne on July 12, 2024, as part of Ibadan’s unique rotational chieftaincy system—a method that ensures a peaceful transition of power .

Born July 5, 1935, he lived through both colonial and independent Nigeria—passing just two days after his 90th birthday and less than a year into his reign .

Commissioned via direct short service in 1970, Olakulehin rose to Major in the Nigerian Army Corps of Engineers before retiring in 1979. He later founded enterprises in printing and contracting, and was elected to the House of Representatives in 1992 under the SDP .

Beyond titles, he championed Yoruba culture, respected traditions of justice in his palace court, and was a fervent voice for peace—reportedly intervening in land disputes and standing firm against malpractice .

7. Predecessor and Succession
He succeeded Oba Lekan Balogun, the 42nd Olubadan who died in March 2024 . With Olakulehin’s passing, former Governor and current Otun Olubadan, Oba Rasheed Ladoja, is expected to ascend as the 44th, per the palace’s chieftaincy protocol .

Governor Seyi Makinde described his passing as “a great loss to the people of Ibadanland,” pledging state support for funeral arrangements. A palace spokesperson confirmed drumming and traditional announcements have begun, signaling transition rites .
